I've been thinking a lot recently about society and how far we've come with equality.
My husband and I recently watched the documentary 'Plus Sized Wars' on Channel 4 and several things struck- one was as how height was seen as a barrier to being a model- yet being a potentially unhealthy weight wasn't- even though this is a state which can be changed where as height is a fixed thing. I was also shocked how there was no mention of men at all in the program as if being obese and being interested in what you wear is a female issue and doesn't affect men.
It is this subtle, almost hidden, sexism that eats away at the achievements that have been made towards equality. It makes the unsaid statement that men can be obese without issue yet women have 'fat-shaming' and on the other side of the coin 'fat and fabulous' labels- aren't these equally applicable to men?!
If we want to have a society where everyone is given equal worth we need to stand up and take notice of these occurrences; apathy or even ignorance mean that it becomes acceptable to separate human from human- and in the end, we are all human.
