Hello my old friend

I realised I hadn't posted on here for ages so here goes with the updates: I have now transitioned to being vegan as much as possible- I know it's impossible to be 100% vegan unless you grow your own food as inevitably some animals may get hurt in harvesting crops, etc but you can choose with every meal, with every bite of food you eat, to eat compassionately and be aware of what you eat. I have come to the point where I don't even see animal products as a food source. My husband is still just about an omnivore but he does have oat milk at home and soya milk powder in his tea and coffee in work and at home he eats whatever vegan meals I make although he will eat meat at other peoples houses occasionally (I know it's not ideal but he needs to make the choice not me!) I've watched so many films and read so many things that it seems abundantly clear that veganism is the way to go. It seems crazy that people are happy for a life to be lost and an animal to suffer just for a couple of minutes of eating something that 'tastes good'- that pig that lost it's life to be your bacon sandwich was probably smarter than a 3 year old child and definitely smarter than the pet dog sat by your side!

 Films I've watched recently:
Earthlings
Cowspiracy
Lucent
Food Inc
The Animals Film

Books I've read:

Farmageddon the true cost of cheap meat (references the UK by Compassion in World Faming chief executive Philip Lymbery)
Meat Logic by Charles Horn
Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer

Please if you have a speck of concern for your own health, the environment, animals or this planet educate yourself and realise that every meal you have you can choose compassion! :)

Book Review: Broken Promise by Linwood Barclay

I was generously lent this book to review by Netgalley.

I will start this review by saying that I do like Linwood Barclay's novels- they have multiple twists, are easy to read so that you feel you are being caught in the flow of the book and are enjoying the ride until the end.

Broken Promise takes place in Barclay's regular haunt of Promise Falls. Strangely for this book, many characters in his previous novels make an appearance- either in person or mentioned by another character. This doesn't make the book unreadable by anyone who hasn't read any of his previous novels, it just makes it like you've seen an old acquaintance, or memory re-lived.

There are quite a few characters in this novel in comparison to his other works so it took a while for the relationships between people to sink in and families are important in this novel as the premise is mainly trying to exonerate one family member from being accused of murder and abduction. The book feels like there are several plot lines all at once and even after reading it there are things left unsolved which leaves it wide open for another book in the series.

Broken Promise did seem slightly more predictable than some of his other novels, although it's not the weaker for it, just slightly different- maybe because I've read so many of his books I know the rhythm of them so can anticipate better.

A recommended read 8/10

Book Review: Precocious by Joanna Barnard

Interesting perspective on the dynamics of grooming and the feelings of the participants. I'd

recommend it as the protagonist meanders through the murky waters of an affair and the

repercussions of being with a former teacher. I felt it was relatively balanced although the

teacher did come across as self-absorbed and flawed whereas in reality humans can be good

and make mistakes. Worth reading & thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to review!

Book Review: In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

Many thanks to the publisher for letting me read & review this novel. I'd highly recommend this to any psychological thriller fans- the author really does manage to portray the confusing and fear and the claustrophobic tension of the hen party- you see the best and worst of the characters and you are never sure quite who has the protagonists interests at heart or whether there is an ulterior motive. The author strings out the secrets although I managed to guess at a few of them you are never 100% until the end- 8/10!

Purge

Well I'm writing this post as I feel like I need to scream at all the injustices and how better than to scream in a blog post. So don't say I didn't warn you!

I want to scream at people who think that the vulnerable and dependent are scapegoats and the media who vilify them- we are meant to be a compassionate society and when we pit one social group against another and increase the social divide we damage ourselves with unjustified ignorance and hate and anger. These people NEED our empathy and compassion not to be spat at or made to feel like scroungers or not belonging because of the tiny minority who do abuse the welfare system. Yes I understand about taking responsibility and working when you can- I'm disabled- I struggle to walk and when I do I walk with a stick or get pushed by my husband in a wheelchair and I work even though it often is to the detriment of my health and a reliance on painkillers to get through the day but I am LUCKY to be in the position where I am not the main breadwinner and I have a generally supportive employer.  I have a huge amount of empathy for those whose health,  finances (whether on benefits or not) and responsibilities or employer don't give them the same luxury as me.

I want to scream at the loss of employment rights and the threat of even more loss of rights planned by our tory government- how can people have good morale when until they've been employed for at least 2 years your employer can get rid of you for no reason.  There needs to be a balance and common sense with rights and currently it is to the detriment of the individual 'little guy' and the benefit of the 'big guys'.

I want to scream at the huge disconnect we have with our food and the lack of compassion this brings- for people to admire cows in fields and whilst gorging a big Mac laugh at vegetarians/vegans for being empathic.  These animals whether you are vegetarian or not should be treated with respect for the short time they are alive- they provide the food you eat and have to go through things that no human would tolerate- their calves repeatedly taken from them and their milk used for the benefit of humans, their friends taken from (studies have shown cows have friends) them and slaughtered.  Being taken to slaughterhouses/abattoirs where they smell the blood and fear of other animals and they can take repeated attempts to be slaughtered- read the latest reports on abbatoirs to see the figures. These animals feel pain and fear and I think it's cruel and wrong to laugh in the face of it or at vegetarians/vegans for recognising it.

I want to scream at the developing racism and stereotyping of different cultures just because a few people make their words louder because they have guns and bombs- this doesn't make their view the majority opinion or define their religion- are Christians going to blank out the crusades or let themselves be defined by minority extremist churches- of course not so why should we do this to Muslim people or assume that because many Islamic women practice modesty that they must their have something to hide? We do not choose where we are born and often many are forced from their 'home' lands because they have no choice- but we CAN choose to be accepting, compassionate and welcoming to those in need and embrace the knowledge we can get from each other and our differences.

Please people wake up- we are losing our compassion and becoming a society where everyone is in it for themselves and treats our neighbours and strangers with suspicion rather than curiosity and good will.

So next time you see someone struggling, or someone who is different to, approach them with good will and a friendly smile as its this openness and curiosity which makes us human and connects us to each other.

Insidious Sexism

I've been thinking a lot recently about society and how far we've come with equality.

My husband and I recently watched the documentary 'Plus Sized Wars' on Channel 4 and several things struck- one was as how height was seen as a barrier to being a model- yet being a potentially unhealthy weight wasn't- even though this is a state which can be changed where as height is a fixed thing. I was also shocked how there was no mention of men at all in the program as if being obese and being interested in what you wear is a female issue and doesn't affect men.

It is this subtle, almost hidden, sexism that eats away at the achievements that have been made towards equality. It makes the unsaid statement that men can be obese without issue yet women have 'fat-shaming' and on the other side of the coin 'fat and fabulous' labels- aren't these equally applicable to men?!

If we want to have a society where everyone is given equal worth we need to stand up and take notice of these occurrences; apathy or even ignorance mean that it becomes acceptable to separate human from human- and in the end, we are all human.

Feeling Anxious..

Well I'm feeling anxious. I'm feeling anxious because it's not long till our 1st wedding anniversary and it's also the 1st anniversary of when our special girl got gastric torsion- yes, on our wedding day.

It was a £1700 pet insurance bill which was really well spent and the best wedding present of all that she survived but ever since then I have this paranoia about her getting ill- especially as she's now 8 years old and she's a large girl at 46KG.

She's had a gurgly stomach today which probably hasn't helped with the anxiety levels but I want her to have a fun holiday with us- I've booked her in for a day groom/pamper session which she normally enjoys as she gets a lot of attention and we are also going to take her to Westonbirt Arboretum so I'm hoping that she'll be happy but it's just the hurdle of the anniversary looming- we haven't been anywhere with her since (and our wedding was local thankfully so when she got the torsion we went straight to our local vet). I've got a vet search app in my phone, packed her insurance details and I've packed a first aid kit for her...I'm determined for this to be a good anniversary where everyone can be calm and happy :)

Book Review- The Forgiveness Project by Marina Cantacuzino

I was generously given this book to read on my Kindle from a publisher on Netgalley.

The Forgiveness Project is highly recommended reading. It is incredibly thought provoking and insightful. After reading this book and trying to understand people's thought processes when dealing with trauma in all guises it made me reflect on my own life and the barriers I have put up in resistance to forgiveness are a redundant tool which hinders personal progress and happiness.

I thought it would be preachy and full of Christ-centric prose but it wasn't- it's about real people's terrible experiences and how they've come to terms with them- and sometimes it's one step forward, two steps back but the awareness of the capacity to forgive in all cases is a powerful insight and you can see how it has enabled people to move on from the trauma.

I really felt that reading this book has changed my perceptions in a positive way- enabling me to think even more compassionately and with further empathy. I am a very empathic person but I do sometimes struggle with my temper even though I follow the Quaker ways. This book will certainly make me appreciate the capacity for peace and compassion through hurt.

Shiny new things and wibbly wobbles

Well my new phablet arrived today so I'm trialling out blogging using it. Hopefully my old O2 number will transfer to it tomorrow.

Had a literal wobble yesterday due to my light sensitivity- went to tell the managers (who were in a meeting) that I wasn't feeling too well and when I got there I nearly collapsed I felt so woozy and nauseous :( so there is me getting unceremoniously wheeled out of county hall in the council wheelchair by my old team leader. I think that the combination of getting over a cold and sleeping badly along with the incredible brightness of the day must have made my medication less effective... really hope my pain clinic appointment arrives soon!

Book Review: You Can Trust Me by Sophie McKenzie

I was generously donated this book to read and review on Netgalley.

I have just finished reading it and I still have the remnants of confusion even though I know the ending- the book leaves you not knowing who to trust or where to go next as you follow the main character, Livy, through unravelling the circumstances of her best friend's death.

I felt frustrated with the other characters in the book for not really wanting to dig deeper and found some things unanswered- such as the friend's boyfriend and how Livy was so shocked by her friend having a meaningful relationship.

The book itself moves along quickly and you get plenty of red herrings thrown in and the tension between Livy and her husband is palpable.

Highly recommended read- 4/5 :)

New shiny things

Well it's phone upgrade time and I'm getting a free Galaxy Note 4 to replace my Xperia Z which my husband will be having- I'm also saving money on my contract AND getting more for my money- hooray :) Hopefully it will arrive sometime next week..

On the food front I think the Quorn Pork Steaks are an excellent replacement- my husband likes them and says the texture is good- I served mine with Quinoa 'Fried rice'.

Had a difficult week this week with my much-loved car- did the responsible thing and replaced the timing belt & water pump as my car is now 10 years old and I also got the PAS belt replaced as it was making a ticking noise but then on Thursday my front spring went! So two new front springs and another bill later..Wonder if Pembrokeshire will ever become a county where a disabled person can get around without a car- some how with the situation as it is and more and more cuts to public transport I doubt it..

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz

Well yesterday I must have slept/dozed from around 10.30 till around 4.30pm. Still don't feel brilliant but I obviously needed the day off. Had the mushroom risotto last night as it's so foolproof and doesn't need any real input as the pressure cooker does all the work :)

I'll be having the Macsween Vegetarian Haggis (blurb is here: Macsween Veggie Haggis) tonight with frozen veggies (I'll use sliced carrots and shredded savoy cabbage as they are in my over-full freezer), Smash mashed potato (I know there are Smash-haters but to be honest when you've got a disability which makes you feel rubbish Smash is always there in the cupboard and takes seconds to make into something filling- seriously, add a bit of butter- or even wholegrain mustard- and try it on a homemade pie or just with gravy and you'd be surprised at how good it is) and cranberry sauce- quick, nutritious and something different...

Ooh organisation!

Well I decided to try and help my brain-fogginess by having a planner- I have put a weekly planner (free printable can be found here: Artsy Farty Mama Printable) in an old picture frame and I'll be writing on the glass using a dry wipe pen so I can re-use the same printable! I admit the frame isn't the best but I'm sure it will look fab once I get a bit of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on it :)

Pain and numbness

Well last night was a doozy- massive flare up of leg pain which also radiated into my lower back- also interestingly I can't put weight on my right leg without it cumpling and I also can't move my right arm/hand properly either. I've taken some oxycontin but despite that I still didn't sleep more than around 2 hours so feel wrecked- hope the people of Pembrokeshire are friendly today!

Sigh..

This week has been particularly difficult- night sweats and night terrors aplenty leave me with less than around 3 hours sleep a night and legs pains, nausea, fatigue and optic migraines have abounded grrrr. I will NOT let this all beat me- I am determined to keep on at the doctors who seem not to listen to me about my deteriorating symptoms.

A Plus point is that we are warm and cosy with our wood burning stove and I'm currently cuddled up to my amazing husband with our special girl beside me- happy days :)

Pancakes, pancakes, pancakes- UPDATED

Well it's that time of year again and even for the atheists like me it's time for pancakes. Normally this involves me getting cranky as the first pancake always seems to be a disaster and I hate food waste (not that it's really wasted as our GSD LOVES pancakes!) but I'm always after new recipes and I'm going to try a compare and contrast this year with vegan & non vegan pancakes and see where they get me :)

Well surprisingly the VEGAN recipe won! It was thicker and the batter once cooker was fluffy and light. The non-vegan recipe was quite watery and stuck to the pan a lot more. I trialled both recipes on my husband and didn't tell him the ingredients for either recipe and he scored 10/10 for the vegan recipe and 7/10 for the non-vegan as he said the shape wasn't as good (due to said pan-stickiness) and the flavour had a more milky taste. I will say that I personally liked both equally but it's handy to know how yummy the vegan recipe is if you are running low on eggs or milk :)

So the VEGAN recipe can be found here (I added slightly more water as the batter is quite thick):

All Recipes Vegan Pancakes

and the NON-VEGAN recipe can be found here on the Awesome Jack Monroe's blog (she has several options for pancakes- all of which are delicious!):

Vegan Instant Pot Risotto

Vegan Instant Pot Mushroom & Pea Risotto (with manual method)

This is one of my arsenal of recipes which I use to convince people that vegan food isn't bland and can be delicious and heart warming- it also happens to be one of my favourite meals because in my pressure cooker I can make it in around 5 minutes so risotto is no longer confined to special occasions- yay! This can also be a good recipe for cooking on a budget- I frequently use frozen vegetables as they are generally cheap, you have less waste and they are frozen soon after being picked so the nutrients are locked in. I have included a non-pressure cooker recipe which does take a lot longer in case you are missing out on one of these fantastic gadgets!

Serves two:

Ingredients

  • 1 diced onion
  • 200g chopped mushrooms (which ever variety you like- I like chestnut but porcini are popular)
  • 100g peas
  • 460ml vegetable stock (ramp this up to 700ml if using manual method)
  • 80ml vegan/veggie wine (red or white- both work well! or if no alcohol available sub for extra stock)
  • 200g carnaroli rice
  • good glug of rapeseed oil (or what ever oil you like)
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tsp thyme (I used dried but if you have fresh then a finely chopped handful is awesome)
  • few drops of truffle oil (optional but this MAJORLY adds depth!)

Method (if using Instant Pot)

  1. Set Instant Pot to 'saute less' add oil and onions and stir to soften
  2. Add rice and stir to coat with oil
  3. Add wine (or 80ml stock) and stir until almost all absorbed
  4. Add the remaining 460ml of stock and mushrooms and stir to combine
  5. Set Instant Pot to High Pressure and cook for 4 minutes. Once done 'quick release' presssure.
  6. Stir the risotto and add the nutritional yeast and thyme. Finally, add the peas and serve immediately- yum!

Method (manual method)

  1. Add oil to saucepan and preheat
  2. add onions and stir to soften
  3. Add rice and coat with oil and stir until translucent
  4. Add wine (or 80ml stock) and the thyme stir until nearly all absorbed
  5. Add mushrooms and another 100ml of stock, again stir until nearly absorbed- keep adding a bit of stock at a time until rice is cooked.
  6. Stir in the peas and the nutritional yeast & serve (and especially enjoy after all the extra effort!) :)
