Book Review: Broken Promise by Linwood Barclay

I was generously lent this book to review by Netgalley.

I will start this review by saying that I do like Linwood Barclay's novels- they have multiple twists, are easy to read so that you feel you are being caught in the flow of the book and are enjoying the ride until the end.

Broken Promise takes place in Barclay's regular haunt of Promise Falls. Strangely for this book, many characters in his previous novels make an appearance- either in person or mentioned by another character. This doesn't make the book unreadable by anyone who hasn't read any of his previous novels, it just makes it like you've seen an old acquaintance, or memory re-lived.

There are quite a few characters in this novel in comparison to his other works so it took a while for the relationships between people to sink in and families are important in this novel as the premise is mainly trying to exonerate one family member from being accused of murder and abduction. The book feels like there are several plot lines all at once and even after reading it there are things left unsolved which leaves it wide open for another book in the series.

Broken Promise did seem slightly more predictable than some of his other novels, although it's not the weaker for it, just slightly different- maybe because I've read so many of his books I know the rhythm of them so can anticipate better.

A recommended read 8/10
